(AF) Nancy Lopez-Melton soared to a 5-over-par 77 Saturday, but managed to maintain her 2-stroke lead after three rounds of the $200,000 Desert Inn ProAm women's golf tournament. LOPEZMelton had a 54-hole total of 216 entering Sunday's final round of the Ladies Professional Golf Association event at the par-72 Desert Inn Country Club course. Two usually steady players who appeared out of contention at the beginning of the third round defending champion Donna Caponi and Pat Bradley got back into it with fine performances. Caponi fired a 3-under-par 69 and Bradley carded a 70. That boosted the pair into a tie for second place along with two others at 218.

Also two strokes off the pace entering the final 18 holes were Jane Blalock, who. had a 73 on Saturday, and Jo Ann Washam, who carded a 76 in the third round. Alone at 219, three strokes behind Cathy Reynolds after a 75. Five players were deadlocked at 220 Kathy Postlewait, who had a 69 on Saturday; Hollis Stacy, 71; Vicki Tabor, 71; Beth Daniel, 75, and Judy Rankin, who soared to a 79. Next at 221 were Carolyn Hill, who had a 71 in the third round, and Shelly Hamlin, who carded a 73 on Veteran JoAnne Carner had a 77 and was well back in the pack at 224.

Lopez-Melton, 24, is shooting for her second straight LPGA victory. She won the Arizona Copper Classic in Tucson two weeks ago, but sat outcast week's Sun City Classic. Lopez-Melton led throughout the event in Tucson and haS also been on top from the start here. Unlike Friday, there was very little wind on Saturday. However, the wind had dried the greens into a crusty condition.

Thirteen of the 18 greens at the Desert Inn are new and therefore, inconsistent. "I hit some good shots but the greens were too crisp and sandy," said Lopez-Melton, who birdied the first hole but had her problems after that. "It got to be a guessing game out there. You couldn't tell what you should hit to the greens. "However, I wasn't losing confidence in my putting.

It was a very forgettable round. I don't feel I'm in the lead. I'm just going to try to get pars tomorrow. Even-par tomorrow will be enough to win." Lopez-Melton had two doublebogeys on Saturday, along with three bogeys, two birdies and 11 pars. She only hit 10 greens in regulation.

Caponi was 10 strokes behind Lopez-Melton entering the third round and was 12 back after the first hole. "It just feels great to have a shot at the championship," said Caponi. "I made a couple of dumb mistakes out there but I was pleased with my play. Everything was working Caponi had six birdies, three bogeys and nine pars. She hit 15 greens in regulation.

The winner of the event, which is co-sponsored by the Desert Inn and Scotch, will earn $30,000. Stone, Norris ripped in exhibition games By The Associated Press Saturday turned out badly for the top two finishers in last year's American League Cy Young Award voting. Winner Steve Stone was battered for seven runs in two innings as the Texas Rangers defeated the Baltimore Orioles 7-6 in an exhibition baseball game. Trailing 2-0, the Rangers unloaded on Stone for three runs in the third inning and and four more in the fourth, negating two-run homers by Baltimore's Gary Roenicke and Doug DeCinces. Meanwhile, Oakland's Mike Norris was rapped for nine hits and four runs in six innings but the A's nipped the Cleveland Indians 5-4.

Cliff Johnson drove in the tying run with a pinch double in the sixth and the winner with an eighth-inning single. The Philadelphia Phillies scored three runs in the eighth inning, including rookie Wil Culver's tie-breaking single, and went on to a 6-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Willie Randolph and Bobby Brown had two hits apiece Brown's first of the spring as the New York Yankees capitalized on four Atlanta errors and defeated the Braves' 'A' team 5-2. Rookie Gene Nelson hurled three shutout innings for New York. Home runs by Sal Butera and Danny Goodwin helped the Minnesota Twins turn back the Houston Astros 6-2, breaking a tie with four runs In the eighth inning.

1 The Los Angeles Dodgers erupted for four runs in the fifth inning, including RBI singles by Rudy Law, Davey Lopes and Reggie Smith, and defeated the Montreal Expos 6-4. Burt Hooton ran his string of scoreless innings to 15 before giving up two runs in the sixth. Pinch hitter Darrell Porter singled home the winning run with two outs to cap a threerun ninth-inning rally against Victor Cruz that lifted the St. Louis Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3.
