Since it lasts a while in the fridge, you can make a big batch and you’ll always have some on hand.
What is grenadine?
Grenadine is a popular non-alcoholic syrup that’s sweet and tangy with a dark red color. It’s used in many popular co*cktail recipes like Sea Breeze and Tequila Sunrise, and mocktail recipes like Shirley Temple and Roy Rogers Drink.
Despite what many people often think, grenadine is not a cherry-flavored syrup. It’s actually pomegranate juice mixed with sugar and heated until it becomes a syrup.
How to make grenadine syrup
Basic grenadine syrup is made with two ingredients:
Pomegranate juice: You can make your own pomegranate juice from fresh pomegranate, or you can use store-bought juice.
Sugar: I use regular granulated sugar for this recipe. Brown sugar works fine as well, although it will give the syrup a darker color.
The best ratio for grenadine is EQUAL PARTS of pomegranate juice to sugar (1:1 ratio).Feel free to adjust the ratio and make the syrup richer by adding more sugar or less sweet by using less sugar.
Start with adding pomegranate juice to a saucepan over medium low heat.
Stir constantly and cook until the surface just begins to bubble and the sugar is completely dissolved.Pro tip: Don’t boil the mixture!
Remove your syrup from the heat and allow it to cool before storing it in a bottle or using it in your co*cktails.
What does grenadine taste like?
Grenadine tastes sweet and tangy with a vaguely pomegranate fruity flavor. It shouldn’t have any cherry flavor.Note that homemade grenadine syrup is not as thick as simple syrup or the traditional store-bought grenadine. The consistency is more like juice than syrup.
How long does homemade grenadine last?
Let your syrup cool at room temperature and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.It can last up to 4 weeks.

Another great grenadine substitute? Pomegranate juice and simple syrup. Mix together 2 parts simple syrup and 1 part pomegranate juice. It makes a sweet, bright red syrup that's very similar to the real thing.
Contrary to popular belief, grenadine is not a cherry-flavored syrup. Maraschino cherries have nothing to do with it. This sweet-tart syrup is actually made from pomegranates, and it is surprisingly easy to make at home.
"Grenadine is a lovely, refreshing drink to have on its own, served with sparkling water or lemonade and some ice," she says. "It's a wonderful addition to many classic co*cktails and mocktails as well, such as the tequila sunrise, Bahama mama, or the Shirley Temple.
Grenadine should be kept refrigerated in an airtight container or swing top bottle. It's best used within one month, if cold pressed and without the addition of vodka. Vodka can optionally be added to your grenadine to extend its shelf life to around 3 months, but I'd still keep that refrigerated.
A Shirley Temple is a non-alcoholic mixed drink traditionally made with ginger ale and a splash of grenadine, and garnished with a maraschino cherry. Modern Shirley Temple recipes may substitute lemon-lime soda or lemonade and sometimes orange juice, in part or in whole.
Classic Grenadine is pomegranate syrup. If you find that you are allergic or don't prefer the flavor of pomegranates I would recommend finding unsweetened cranberry juice in a health food store. Be sure that it is unsweetened and not from concentrate.
Its vibrant red color also makes it an excellent addition to visually stunning drinks. Unlike triple sec, grenadine is non-alcoholic, which means that it's perfect for those who prefer not to include alcohol in their co*cktails.
